Italy - Sacred

The staging of the incomprehensible

It was actually only the heat that drove the northerner into the coolness of sacred buildings. There was more going on inside than outside, very different from here. There is also much more to see. It often doesn't even feel like I'm inside somewhere. Of course, many of the rooms are also very spacious, like ships. However, size alone is not enough to create this sense of well-being, to emanate this calm. It is also the meticulous furnishings, the arrangement, the staging, the light, not like in the bare halls here. Behind the columns in the corners, there is a constant scurrying, rustling and whispering. Shadows and deep darkness alternate with light sources of all kinds and bright reflections on precious marble. Often someone is sitting, or rather hanging, asleep on a pew. Large, comfortable sofas should be placed here, then perhaps I too could decide to take a nap.
